I’m going on a trip to The Continent on Monday for two weeks, and I have a car rental lined up. Avis says it’s a “Skoda Octavia Estate Or Similar” with a manual gearbox. I bet it’s going to be “Or Similar”. So, who wants to take guesses on the car? I’ll post the answer Tuesday evening CEST.

I secretly hope that it is a French car. I mean, the Skoda is the more or less the same as getting a Golf Wagon in the US.

I’m thinking Citroen C4 Cactus. But this is Avis, so I’m having to prepare myself for a Focus Estate 1.5 TDCi.

Car rentals... never give what you expect.

I planned to rent a “Nissan Maxima or similar”, and I got a 4Runner.

Or when I planned to rent a “Ford Focus or similar”, and got a Passat.

In the US, that does happen a lot (I travel for work a fair amount). In Europe, if you get a car class, you tend to get something from that class, and not an operational upgrade.

I’m with you. I’m bracing for a Focus Estate 1.5 TCDi (I mean they could have gone for the 1.0L EcoBoost...)

At least I am not limited to the automatic only cars...

Fingers crossed you do get an Octy. They are great cars. Though if you do it’s likely to be a regular SE or Greenline 1.6TDi 110ps rather than a 2.0TDi 150ps.

To which part of the continent are you going? The Skoda in your picture has Dutch plates, but I guess that’s just a random picture found on Google.

C4 Cactus is actually based on the C3, a subcompact. If you’re getting a Citroen it’s going to be either a regular C4 hatch (no wagon available, strangly) or, more likely, a C4 Picasso in either long (3 row) or short (2 row) wheel base. The C4 Picasso is an MPV, similar to a crossover but without the silly body cladding or offroad pretence. The only one available in the US is the C-Max.

Yes, but I am picking the car up in the Netherlands. So it seemed appropriate for the stock picture to have Dutch plates.

Countries in the itinerary include the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany.

I’ll be in Den Haag on Tuesday and then we return to Amsterdam on the 18th. The friends want to visit Apeldoorn as well so they can go to the primate park.

I’m always available for beer. :)

That would’ve been my suggestion. Want to test drive an ‘88 Peugeot 205 GTI (or a ‘97 306 convertible or a ‘00 406 coupe)? I live in the north though, Groningen (city), which is a bit out of your way I assume. I am always available for beer as well.

It’s only 90 minute drive from Amsterdam or Apeldoorn, so I would just have to convince the other two people in the car that it could be done. Our drive is from Apeldoorn to Amsterdam, so I could throw in a detour, or get them to the hotel early and go exploring.

And a 205 GTI would be an excellent test drive.

A quick reply by phone as Kinja seems broken on my laptop. If you want to come over, I’d be happy to have a beer and to let you drive the 205 (not in that order). Do let me know when you’d be planning such a thing. Also, check Google maps or equivalent as I don’t seem to be too close to where you’ll be.
